MNANGAGWA’S SECRET PLOT TO STAY IN POWER EXPOSED
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his close allies in ZANU PF are secretly working on a dangerous plan to stay in power beyond his second term, which ends in 2028. While public debates about succession have gone quiet, behind the scenes, the ruling elite is preparing yet another attack on the constitution. At the upcoming ZANU PF conference in Mutare from 13 to 18 October, they plan to push a new resolution to extend Mnangagwa’s rule to 2030 or even longer. This follows last year’s conference in Bulawayo, where the party passed a resolution giving him the option to stay until 2030. Now they want to make it legal.
Before the politburo met on 2 July, the party had already tasked Patrick Chinamasa and Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi to find a way to turn the 2023 resolution into law. Chinamasa, who was initially hesitant, has now changed his tune—mainly because of his ties to businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei. Tagwirei, a key Mnangagwa backer, is fighting for a seat in the Central Committee and is using his influence to support the extension of Mnangagwa’s power. The entire operation is being masked as a party decision, but it’s clear this is Mnangagwa’s plan, even if he pretends to be distant from it.
What makes this even more shocking is that Mnangagwa rose to power in 2017 through a coup led by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga. Now, he is working to block that same man from ever taking over. Instead, he wants to handpick a successor from his own inner circle—someone who will protect him and his interests after 2028. This is not democracy. It is betrayal.
Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe has already hinted at the game plan. He told the media that there will be no elections in 2028 and that the next vote will be in 2030. He even claimed that the Mutare conference will officially support the constitutional change. But the law is clear: Zimbabwe must hold elections every five years. Any attempt to delay them is unconstitutional. It’s a silent coup—a clear plan to stay in power by dodging the law and silencing the people.
Garwe also said all ten ZANU PF provinces are backing the proposal. Why? Because the party is too afraid to let the people vote in a referendum. If they tried to change the presidential term limits legally, they would need public approval. And they know the public might reject Mnangagwa. So instead, they are trying to use their majority in Parliament to delay elections, sidestepping the will of the people and avoiding legal scrutiny. Legal experts are already warning that this move is illegal and dangerous.
This whole plan is being cooked up behind the walls of the Mutare Polytechnic College. Mnangagwa’s inner circle is not resting. They are fighting to ensure he stays in power, not because he is doing a great job, but because they are afraid of losing control. They talk about his so-called “God-ordained vision” for 2030, but the truth is much darker. They fear what Chiwenga might do. They fear elections. They fear the people.
This is not leadership. It is greed. It is fear. It is a betrayal of every Zimbabwean who wants a better future. While the leaders plot to keep eating, the people continue to starve. We cannot be silent while our constitution is destroyed for the benefit of one man.
The time to speak up is now. Mnangagwa must step down in 2028. No more tricks. No more lies. No more delays. This country belongs to the people—not to ZANU PF. The constitution is not theirs to change. It is ours to defend.
